How Can You Customize and Optimize Your WordPress RSS Feed?

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

In case you are not familiar with this acronym, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The reason that RSS is an important piece of Internet technology is because it let’s people get the latest content that is published on a blog, without having to continually visit a blog to see if it’s been updated. By using an RSS reader (such as Google Reader), people can get updates to a large number of blogs in just one location. When someone “subscribes to your blog’s RSS feed,” that means they have signed up to receive new content in their RSS reader whenever you publish it.

Although WordPress already has RSS technology built into it, there are some things you can do to customize and optimize your blog’s RSS feed. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular methods for making changes to your default WordPress RSS feed:

FeedBurner: If you implement anything that is discussed in this article, it should be to create a FeedBurner feed. By “burning” your RSS feed through FeedBurner, you will be able to publicize, optimize, analyze and monetize your RSS feed. For example, once you sign-up with this free service, not only will visitors to your blog be able to receive your RSS updates through a RSS reader, but they will also be able to choose to receive updates via email. This means that anytime you publish a new blog post, it will be emailed directly to them.

Because WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms, FeedBurner has made it extremely easy to integrate FeedBurner into WordPress.

Full Text Feed: When you publish posts on your blog, you may use the more tag because you only want to display part of your posts on the homepage of your blog. However, this doesn’t mean that you don’t want RSS subscribers to be able to read the full feed.

To ensure that RSS subscribers don’t have to click through to continue reading your post, you can use this simple plugin to deliver your full posts to them.

RSS Footer: One of the only downsides to RSS is that it makes it possible for people to automatically steal your content and syndicate it to their own blog (without your permission). However, while people may still choose to steal your content, you can ensure that you get credit for being the original source by using the RSS Footer plugin.

Once you install the RSS Footer plugin, you will be able to create a footer that will appear at bottom of each post in your RSS feed. In addition to a copyright notice, you can include links back to your blog. This can feed can also be useful if you are interested in selling ads within your RSS feed.

RSSless: While RSS works seamlessly for text content, there are times when multimedia content (such as Flash video) may not appear correctly in an RSS reader. To ensure that your readers know to check out your original post if they want to view the piece of multimedia you embedded, you can use the RSSless plugin to replace that piece of multimedia with a message to anyone viewing the content through your RSS feed.

Top 6 Mods for phpBB

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Viewtopic Birthday: People like to feel special on their birthday, and members of your online community are no exception. If you want to ensure that everyone in your online community gets a special treat on their birthday, you will love the Viewtopic Birthday MOD. Created for phpBB version 3.0.1, there is a reason that this MOD has been downloaded over a million times. Whenever it’s some one’s birthday, they will be treated to a birthday cake in the viewtopic area of phpBB.

Profile Views List: It’s not easy to receive a perfect rating (five out of five) from the phpBB community, but that is exactly what this MOD has accomplished. Once installed, the Profile Views List allows each of your users to see how many total times their profile has been visited. Created for version 3.0.4 of phpBB, this MOD has several additional features, such as showing the last time a profile was visited.

Attachment Mod: Even if you haven’t started running your own online community yet, if you have participated in any online communities, you have undoubtedly seen that members of these communities like to share things with each other. Whether it’s an audio file, a script, a video file or any other number of things, there are a lot of situations where members of an online community want to be able to attach a file to a post they make or a thread they start.

By installing the Attachment Mod (which was made for phpBB 2.0.21), you will give the users of your own online community the ability to post files for each other with just a few clicks of their mouse.

YouTube Video BBCode: Since you are reading this article, you are obviously an Internet savvy person who has a lot of knowledge that normal Internet users don’t possess. However, even the most inexperienced Internet user knows about YouTube, which is why it’s important to give your forum members the ability to easily add YouTube videos to the posts that they make.

Fortunately for you, that is exactly what this MOD will do. Made for phpBB version 2.0.19, this MOD will allow the members of your forum to embed YouTube videos into their posts, regardless of their experience level with this kind of task.

Welcome PM on First Log-in: Making the decision to register with a forum and actively participate (instead of simply lurking) can be a big decision for many people. Therefore, you want to make sure that they are as comfortable with this decision is possible. Although there are different ways to do this, one of the easiest is with this MOD. Made for phpBB versions 3.0.RC2 and 3.0.RC4, this MOD allows you to create a custom welcome message that will be sent to every new user when they log-in for the first time.

Cash Mod: This may be the last MOD on this list, but I honestly think it might be the coolest one. The reason for that is this reward system MOD has so many features and functionality. From donating cash to setting up a points system, you really have to check out this MOD for yourself to get a feel for everything that it can do (made for phpBB 2.0.18).
