Install phpESP for a Web Based Survey

Whether you run a heavily visited news site, an online business or even a community of like minded users who gather to discuss favorite topics in your site’s forums, php ESP has something to offer your web site. Since the ESP part of the script’s name stands for Easy Survey Package, you can be sure that you do not need to be a hi tech wonder geek in order to install this script on your own site. However, it is still a very intelligent decision because merely installing this script proves to your users that you care about their feedback and want to involve them more in your site. You can use the surveys to help determine what content you should bring to your site in the future or even to find out what troubles are ailing your visitors so that you can make your site closer to what they expect when they stop by to visit it. This is going to naturally improve traffic because there is no substitute for direct feedback from the people who use your web site.

Whether you want to create very simple surveys that merely get a feel for what your users think about a certain topic or concept, or if you seek to create truly complex and detailed surveys that really give you in depth insight into how they feel about very specific topics, phpESP is going to let you do that easily. That’s why this completely free open source package has become such a main stay for site that need a “no budget” solution to their polling needs.

To begin the installation process, simply login to your web hosting account and sign in the way you normally would. Using Fanastico is the simplest solution so these instructions are designed with that installation tool in mind. Along the left hand side of the screen you should be able to scroll down until you locate the phpESP line and then select that. You will be taken to a screen that explains the basics of the script. You will want to click on New Installation here, that option being most of the way down the page.

Now, you need to let Fantastico know which domain you would like phpESP installed onto. Be sure to choose the right domain and then you will need to put in the directory you want to use. You can leave the directory space blank, but this means that phpESP will be on the root of your domain so that when you type in www.YourDomainName.com (YourDomainName.com = whatever the .com address of your actual domain name is), phpESP will come up first. If your site is only supposed to be running surveys then root can work, otherwise if you wish to incorporate phpESP with the other software on your site, you will need to install it into its own directory. You can choose any directory name you like, but most people will use “phpESP” for ease of remembering later.

Next, fill in the fields you see on this screen. You need to create a user name, a password, the name of your site’s survey section (or the name of your site in general, if you prefer). The name you wish to use for phpESP administration and then an e-mail address round out this page’s tasks. At the end of this, click Install phpESP.

That’s it! Now you can log into phpESP and configure it to work the way you would like it to.
