For an unknown reason, there is a lot of confusion over exactly what VPS hosting is. This is weird because it’s actually a pretty easy concept to understand. The best way to think of it is a hybrid cross between dedicated hosting and a shared server. That is the basics of what VPS is all about so when you choose this kind of web hosting for your site or sites, all you are doing is getting yourself a mid level of control over your site that is usually offered for less than the price of dedicated hosting with fewer restrictions than straight up shared hosting where you need to be more conscientious of your neighbors on the server.
To be straight about it, VPS is a situation where the web hosting company has gone through the trouble to take one large server and divide it up, using software, into several mini servers that are all independent of each other. This means that the actions of each account holder are a lot less likely to impact the abilities of all the other account holders. It means fewer rules, if we make things a bit plainer. This is why so many people love VPS: it lets them have a high level of control over how they run their server, but it is not sticking them with the bulk of the work nor the costs that a dedicated server would require.
That is very good news for most people who do not have the cash to shell out for dedicated hosting and who also do not have near the skills that running and maintaining such a server would require. They are a lot better off with VPS where they get a lot of great features at a price that is going to work for them. To be clear, a dedicated server is more of a luxury and a thing to brag about than it is something that will end up being super useful to the vast majority of people with a web site, whether they are pros at making money over the web or not. So don’t be fooled by the concept of not being a serious pro unless you have a dedicated server. VPS hosting works just as well for this purpose and it costs a lot less so that is a smart business decision as long as it meets your actual needs.
People that want to be able to have a lot more power will go with dedicated hosting, but most of the time this is because they really do have a massive web site that serves millions upon millions of visitors on a regular basis and if they had VPS or shared hosting they would crash those servers and ruin it for the other account holders. In reality, very few sites obtain this level of popularity and it is perfectly possible to generate a serious about of profit without ever reaching this level of visitors. Still, VPS offers a great solution that can normally be scaled by the web host upon request and it definitely beats shared hosting in terms of versatility and power.
