Web 2.0 is the term being used to describe the next generation of websites, as website developers strive to create search engine and user-friendly websites using improved marketing strategies, design strategies and the concept that creating social media communities is one of the most efficient ways to attract visitors. Trends in social media are quickly growing in popularity, to the point where it seems like nothing exists beyond these clever social networking and media communities.

Photo Sharing
- One of the best websites online for sharing photos within a community is Flickr, found at http://www.Flickr.com. This website offers a clean, easy on the eyes layout with tools that are simple to use for uploading and labeling photos to share with other users on the Internet. Because Flickr makes use of AJAX-technology, reloading pages is never necessary. Flickr is a great example of what Web 2.0 has to offer the Internet: Visually appealing, user-friendly web applications that make communicating and sharing easier than ever.

Social Networking - The social networking component of Web 2.0 trends is growing quickly. MySpace was the first main social networking website to hit the scene, followed by FaceBook, and now a number of small social networking communities for a variety of target audiences, including social networking communities for certain hobbies, interests, fans of specific movies and television shows, people with certain professions or career choices, and so on. Social networking involves community web applications that allow users to share photos, comments, blog entries and more with one another, interacting with friends, bands, and meeting new people.

Social News and Social Bookmarking Sites - Social news and social bookmarking websites are gaining popularity now that Internet users see what they are really about. The first social bookmarking website was Del.icio.us, which was purchased by Yahoo in 2005, though little has changed because Del.icio.us was already a success before Yahoo got their hands on it. Del.icio.us allows users to keep track of everything they enjoy on the web, from music, to movies, favorite websites, blogs, and much more. Social news websites like Digg and StumbleUpon are also gaining serious notoriety as of late. These websites are run completely by their users, who are allowed to submit news, videos, stories, articles, images and podcasts for consideration, so that other users can vote on them. Websites that receive attention in these social media communities often benefit from severely increased traffic, which is an incentive for them to create content that users will want to pay attention to on these sites.

All of the websites and web applications being developed to meet Web 2.0 standards have some things in common: All are visually appealing, user-friendly, and offer a community aspect to their users. Internet users tend to prefer community-style websites where they can participate to a certain extend rather than just serving as a spectator. As web applications and websites continue to change in order to fit these characteristics, Web 2.0 will take hold on the Internet, becoming more than simply a website trend.

3 year old

A three-year-old boy has used his mother’s computer to buy a £9,000 car on an internet auction site.

Jack Neal’s parents only discovered their son’s successful bid when they received a message from eBay about the Barbie pink Nissan Figaro.

Here’s something I found quite amazing, a three year old managed to login to his mom’s pc and since ebay was auto logged in, was able to successfully order a car on ebay using the BUY NOW option.

Today is the day!

Talk Like A Pirate Day is this coming Tuesday, September 19th. Founded by two guys in 1995 and popularized by humorist Dave Barry’s syndicated column in 2002, this bizarre occasion probably would’ve been a one-ff if it weren’t for the Internet’s appetite for ridiculous humour. The page explains how to talk like a pirate and lists pirate vocabulary.

I found this article to be very interesting and being in the IT/Hosting industry this surely caught my attention ;)
Also being a rock/metal fan but generally open to all genres of music including jazz/blues/pop and so on as well.

It’s official… Techies are a breed apart. According to new research, IT staff are twice as likely as other staff members to wear a heavy metal T-shirt and carry a Maglite and a Leatherman. They are also 34% more likely to wear a ponytail, 63% more likely to wear black jeans; and 32% less likely to wear clean clothes every day.

September 9th, 2006Ig Nobel Prize

clocky2.bmp
clocky-2-c.bmp
The Clock is the winner of the 2005 Ig Nobel Prize for Economics.

The Ig Nobel Prize, is an hysterical award for real accademic research.
According to Wikipedia, The Ig Nobel Prizes are a parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given each year in early autumn — around the time the recipients of the genuine Nobel Prizes are announced — for ten achievements that “first make people laugh, and then make them think.” Organized by the scientific humor journal Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), they are presented by genuine Nobel Laureates at a ceremony at Harvard University.

A few Ig Nobel Prizes include:

ECONOMICS
The Vatican, for outsourcing prayers to India.

PEACE
Charl Fourie and Michelle Wong of Johannesburg, South Africa, for inventing an automobile burglar alarm consisting of a detection circuit and a flamethrower.

BIOLOGY
C.W. Moeliker, of Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for documenting the first scientifically recorded case of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck.

MANAGED HEALTH CARE
The late George and Charlotte Blonsky of New York City and San Jose, California, for inventing a device (US Patent #3,216,423) to aid women in giving birth — the woman is strapped onto a circular table, and the table is then rotated at high speed.

NUTRITION
John Martinez of J. Martinez & Company in Atlanta, Georgia, for Luak
Coffee, the world’s most expensive coffee, which is made from
coffee beans ingested and excreted by the luak (aka, the palm
civet), a bobcat-like animal native to Indonesia.

FLUID DYNAMICS: Victor Benno Meyer-Rochow of International University Bremen, Germany and the University of Oulu, Finland; and Jozsef Gal of Loránd Eötvös University, Hungary, for using basic principles of physics to calculate the pressure that builds up inside a penguin, as detailed in their report “Pressures Produced When Penguins Pooh — Calculations on Avian Defaecation.”

This truly sounds like a nightmare come true for this unhappy Microsoft Customer, whats your opinion on this? Feel free to comment :)
————————-
Please find enclosed my invoice for £1,200 sterling for administrative and consulting work, caused by the need to repair Microsoft sabotage. I dare say you’d like details:

Last night, your organisation destroyed about three hours worth of work I’d done.
SPONSORED LINKS
nightmare

The work was a set of notes being made in a text editor which I am required to use by one of my clients. All the files were open last night, when a family emergency occurred, and I was unable to devote the 10 minutes required to closing them down. I was logged into a remote system with a one-time login, which I cannot get clearance for again till Tuesday. And I had several websites open on my desktop.

During the night, Microsoft took it upon itself to update my computer. I arrived at work to find a message stating: “Windows recently downloaded and installed an important security update to help protect your computer. This update required an automatic restart of your computer.”

I have gone to some trouble to ensure that this doesn’t happen. I have set Windows Update to “custom” - meaning that I will decide which updates I need to install, and how the update will be handled. And when an update says “this requires a restart” I have always specified that I will restart the machine at a time of my own choosing.

August 17th, 2006Tourgasm

Are you familiar with the name Dane Cook? I have seen the man perform on Comedy Central but I have never caught his name until recently on HBO while watching his show/documentary “Tourgasm”. I have completed the entire 9 episodes and I enjoyed it a lot. While it is only available on HBO atm, I believe it will be on DVD very soon. The show had it’s ups and downs, lots of drama but most of all it was very funny and entertaining with a twist for each episode. I highly recommend this for those that enjoy Comedy Central and so on.

Something from wikipedia describing this show:

Tourgasm was a 30-day 20-show stand-up comedy tour in 2005 featuring Dane Cook and 3 of his best friends in the industry: Gary Gulman, Jay Davis, and Robert Kelly. The tour was filmed in its entirety and is being aired on HBO as a documentary in June of 2006. The documentary was created and directed by Dane Cook. Gary Gulman left the tour because of unknown reasons, but returned after a few days. At each destination Dane Cook and fellow comedians play a game or do an activity before performing. Some of the events include horseback riding, riding Segway scooters, and visiting Niagara Falls. These events usually get out of hand, such as when the Niagara Falls trip involved throwing hats off of the ledge.
