Install PHProjekt to Run Collaborative Projects on Your Site

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Today’s digital age is changing the way that we work on projects. It is not just the wiki format that has sprung up to allow people to collaborate, but now there are group work solutions for teams such as PHP Projekt, a definite advance in the field. While comparisons abound between PHProjekt vs DotProject and other similar utilities, one thing is for certain: teams are loving the ability to collaborate thanks to the easy availability of these open source solutions that allow them to work together in an easy, organized and highly effective way. The efficiency that PHProjekt vs old time methods offers is simply a no contest situation. There is no way the old methods of emailing tasks and progress notes back and forth will ever compare to the availability of such features as the time card system, contact manager, group calendar and other specifics that PHProjekt 6 can offer to those who want to streamline the work process of developing software or just about any other task you think of.

You can count on the fact that having great groupware for your site is going to give your team a boost because it brings everything together in an intuitive way. There are PHProjekt skins that can help you give your entire site the right look and feel so that it matches naturally with any forums or other aspects of your site that adhere to a certain design sensibility. This gives you a great deal of freedom that you would be hard pressed to find from other solutions out there today. However, perhaps one of the best aspects about PHProjekt is that it is very simple to install so you are not going to spend hours struggling, even if you are not the most code oriented geek on the blog.

Let’s take a look at the steps to get PHProjekt up and running on your server so you can see if it is a solution that works for your needs:

Before anything else, you will need to visit your web hosting server and log in. You want to find Fantastico so that you can make the installation process as easy as possible. Once you have located that, look along the left hand side of the Fantastico interface until you find PHProjekt (usually under the Project Management header) and click the name to continue. You’ll be taken to a screen that shows you a bit about this script and there you will see the option for New Installation. Click that and you’re on your way!

Next, you will need to select the domain on which you would like to install this script. Below the domain name selection drop down box, you will see a blank field asking you to tell Fantastico which directory you would like PHProjekt installed to.  The key here is that you need to decide whether your entire domain is going to run just PHProjekt or if you want it as only a portion of what that domain offers. By leaving the box blank, you are defaulting the installation to ‘root’ which means that if a visitors goes directly to the .com (or .org, etc) address of your site, they will see PHProjekt. If you want something else to come up first then you need to type in a directory name such as, most commonly, phprojekt.

After you have decided where your PHProjekt installation should be placed, then you need to fill in the rest of the fields. You will want a user name (most often this is admin, but you can use any name you know you will remember), a good password that is secure to protect your projects and then your site name, along with your e-mail address. That’s all you need to do before clicking Install PHProjekt at the bottom of the page.

Now you finally have your own project management software so that you and your colleagues can work together in a sensible, intuitive way right over your own site.
